Once Upon a Time in Tibet (2010)

Once Upon A Time In Tibet adalah sebuah film romantis dengan latar belakang Perang Dunia II kala Cina berperang melawan Jepang. Film yang diluncurkan April 2011 di Beijing ini menampilkan aktor/penyanyi Taiwan Peter Ho Jun-tung (The Monkey King, Kamen Rider 555:Paradise Lost), aktris Xiao Song Jia (Red Cliff, Curiosity Kills The Cat), model asal Amerika Joshua Hannum, komposer Taiwan Tino Bao dan penyanyi Tibet San Mu Ke.

Dikisahkan, Robert Smith (Joshua Hannum) adalah pilot Amerika yang terluka berat pasca kecelakaan pesawat. Nyawanya diselamatkan oleh Yongcuo (Xiao Song Jia), seroang gadis Tibet yang diasingkan karena dianggap pembawa sial. Cintapun tumbuh diantara mereka dalam keterbatasan bahasa. Di lain sisi, pemuda Tibet, Jiangcuo (Peter Ho) memimpin pasukan untuk mencari Robert Smith yang disangka pembunuh.

Film ini merupakan film kedua karya sutradara Dai Wei. Film sebelumnya, Ganglamedo adalah film musikal yang juga berkisah tentang kehidupan masyarakat Tibet. Dai Wei sendiri saat ini sedang menggarap film ketiganya untuk melengkapi trilogi Tibet.

“Membutuhkan tiga tahun untuk menyelesaikan film ini. Orang-orang pergi ke Tibet untuk membuat film, tapi saya membuat film untuk Tibet. Tempat ini sungguh-sungguh memberikan saya inspirasi untuk menghasilkan karya terbaik”, ungkap Dai yang rela mondar-mandir Tibet hingga 30 kali selama kurun waktu 12 tahun observasi.

Film yang memakan waktu syuting dua bulan itu juga menghadirkan deretan artis muda bersinar seperti Peter Ho, aktor/penyanyi Taiwan yang dipuja banyak perempuan. Pemuda kelahiran 1975 yang punya hobi fitness ini harus rela terlihat ‘dekil’, jauh dari imagenya dengan wajah putih kinclong. “Susah sekali mendapatkan tempat untuk mandi selama syuting”, ungkapnya. Sementara Song Jia, nominee Golden Rooster Awards itu sempat jatuh sakit selama syuting. Baik dia maupun Peter berusaha keras untuk belajar tentang budaya Tibet serta dialek sehingga terdengar pas di telinga penonton.

Selain menampilkan kisah cinta romantis, film ini juga akan memanjakan mata Anda dengan pemandangan dataran tinggi Tibet yang sangat indah yang ditangkap secara seluloid oleh sinematografer terkenal Taiwan Mark Lee Ping Bing (In The Mood For Love) seperti pemandangan di Lhasa juga Danau Namco.

The Woman Knight Of Mirror Lake (2011) BluRay 720p

It's the centennial year of China's overthrow of its centuries long imperial rule spanning a number of dynasties, and it's no surprise for films coming out of the Chinese territories to be putting out more patriotic, biographical fare of its martyrs and heroes, some more well known like Dr Sun Yat-sen in Jackie Chan's 1911, while others perhaps not so with Qiu Jin, the titular woman knight, known for her progressive thinking and feminism, although my interest was stoked with her character's appearance to kickstart Jackie Chan's film. So having it released post 1911, may be a shrewd move given the trailer for the film had been played for months already before finally being released.

Director Herman Yau may seem like the director to go to if not to latch onto any popularity wave as far as film franchises and genres go. With his Ip Man: The Legend Begins, he took on the character outside of the Wilson Yip-Donnie Yen universe and gave it his own spin with Alex To in the lead, and had a claim to some legitimacy with the casting and roping in of Ip Man's direct descendant Ip Chun as technical reference as well. It's been a long way since his earlier days of achieving cult status with his iconic Category III films like The Eight Immortals Restaurant and Ebola Syndrome, to being at the helm of a film celebrating the life and times of a Chinese heroine when interest has turned toward biographical stories of historical characters.

Actress Huang Yi, better known for her role in Overheard 2 and the campy Treasure Inn, plays the title character who is born into privilege, but having am inquisitive streak and mind of her own, challenging customs and traditions at a young age. Skilled in both the written word and in martial arts, she's an intellect with an independent mind, but is still constraint by societal rules, which at the time under Manchu Qing rule, had in place rather regressive norms such as bound feet and lack of education for women, in order to keep them docile and submissive due to a physical handicap passing off as beauty. Needless to say her shock jock tactics such as dressing in man's clothes do not gain approval from her government official husband (Kevin Cheng) who sees it as a lost of face amongst his peers, and determined to find her true calling, pack up and left for Japan, where she meets similar minded peers including Xu Xilin (Alex To) where the seeds of revolution got incepted and cultivated.

Credit has to go to the scriptwriters to produce a well researched into biographical story, having Qiu Jin's multi-faceted life, roles and talent all incorporated into the character, without feeling repetitive. And in doing so you'll marvel at and admire her talent for poetry, martial arts (though for entertainment sake she fights like she can take on Wong Fei-Hong and Ip Mam together) and her rousing speeches on revolution, although with the latter it's more of a fight against an oppressive regime that condones the lack of female rights. And not only that, her uphill battle involves changing mindsets even amongst the educated women themselves, who have already ingrained what the skewed norm is. If anything her involvement in revolution came from the need to overthrow existing mindsets and provide the level of freedom and equality for her gender in China. And surprisingly Huang Yi manged to pull the character off, as she hadn't really had any role quite in the same league, or noteworthy of a challenge to begin with.

This is one film that was absolutely better than the promotional trailer made it out to be, which was quite the bore as it played out just about every aspect of the film and was a tad overlong, so thank goodness the film was way better delivered. We begin at the tail end of Qiu Jin's revolutionary life with the assault of her Dayong school, a front to train civil servants but in fact used as a training ground for revolutionaries, and slowly from flashbacks we get glimpses into milestones of her life, shifting backward and forward through transitions that worked at times, while others quite clumsily executed, though nothing more than to grab your attention to its technicality with limited impact to the plot of course.

The other gripe I had was with its martial arts. Granted the kung fu set action pieces would draw crowds but I've just about had a limit with wire-work stunts executed in physics-defying fashion. It's a historical biography, and the fight choreography could have been more subtly executed rather than to break the laws dictated by science. You can have superhuman throws in fantastical, mythical stories, but for something like this, realism would be much appreciated since so much effort had gone into creating a credible tale only for this niggling aspect to shave off some brownie points.

But on the whole, Herman Yau had assembled a credible piece of work that can serve as a launchpad for anyone remotely interested in researching Qiu Jin, with Anthony Wong and Lam Suet playing Manchu officials on a divided fence with one adamant to get rid of her soon to please the courts, while the other appreciating the fact the execution of a talented individual he admires, is nothing but a loss to society and country even. The final moments of her life is moving and poignant to say the least, a reminder in the world we live in that one's progressive thoughts and actions often puts one ahead of the pack, but all alone, and it takes tremendous gumption to literally make personal sacrifices and fight for what one believes in for the greater good, especially when up against powers that be who enjoy the status quo for obvious benefits. Highly recommended for that sneak peek into a Chinese heroine's life through film.

Conan The Barbarian - BluRay Version

Kisah Conan tentunya akan sangat tidak diminati oleh para perempuan maupun para penggemar kisah-kisah romantis, namun bagi remaja laki-laki yang sangat mendambakan serial aksi yang maskulin, membaca cerita Conan di kala itu akan terasa layaknya berada di awang-awang.

Lalu yang menjadi pertanyaan, apakah film ini akan sesukses film pertama yang dibintangi oleh Arnold Schwarzenegger?

Pemeran Conan kali ini adalah Jason Momoa, seorang lelaki setinggi 190 cm. Walaupun ia tidak memiliki otot sebesar Arnold, yang telah 7 kali meraih gelar Mr. Olympia, namun banyak pihak yang menilai penampilan Jason cukup impresif. Ia dianggap memiliki kualitas akting yang lebih baik ketimbang Arnold kala itu. Sebenarnya akting Arnold kala itu sudah cukup baik, namun Jason dinilai dapat lebih menjiwai peran sebagai Conan ini. Dan yang terutama, wajahnya adalah 100 persen Conan, dengan alis besar khas Neanderthal (jenis manusia purba yang telah punah), sesuai penggambaran seniman terkenal Frank Frazetta tentang Conan. Benar-benar casting yang sempurna.

Ini adalah sebuah kisah tentang perjuangan seorang prajurit untuk menyelamatkan bangsa Hyboria dari perbudakan oleh sang penguasa jahat. Sang penguasa jahat, yang diperankan oleh Stephen Lang, terkesan mirip dengan karakter Sauron dalam The Lord of the Rings (LOTR), namun di sini dia berhasrat mendapatkan sebuah topeng, bukannya sebuah cincin. Dan di awal cerita, Conan muda diajarkan cara-cara bermain pedang oleh sang ayah, yang diperankan oleh Ron Perlman.

Yang juga terasa mirip seperti LOTR adalah upaya Conan untuk membawa sepenggal kisah masa lalunya yang hilang, ke kehidupannya sekarang. Namun, yang sedikit membedakan adalah faktor sang penulis, yaitu J.R.R.Tolkien (penulis LOTR) yang mampu menciptakan sebuah dunia mengejutkan, dengan memberikan kesan yang teramat mendalam pada latar belakang, konteks, koneksi, dan makna di balik setiap detail. Sedangkan bagi Anda yang merupakan penggemar cerita Conan pasti mengetahui, di samping adegan seru dari perkelahian, selebihnya adalah percakapan yang terasa cukup membosankan.

Film ini pun memiliki adegan pertempuran klimaks yang hampir sama dengan film-film aksi lainnya, mulai dari Kenneth Branagh’s Henry V, Braveheart, The Lord of the Rings, 300, hingga Pirates of the Caribbean. Bahkan terdapat pula setting yang menyerupai “Pertambangan Moria” dari film LOTR, yang penuh dengan tentakel pengintai di dalam air.

Namun, meskipun film ini banyak mengambil setting dari film-film sukses di masa lalu yang sudah pernah kita tonton semuanya, tokoh Conan the Barbarian tetap saja memiliki nuansa sensual yang memiliki pesona tersendiri. Film ini murni fiksi, namun tampilan visual yang sangat diperhatikan dengan detail dan terkesan mencolok, meskipun membuat film ini tampak indah secara visual, namun miskin dari segi konten cerita. Melancholia

Rencana pernikahan Justine (Kirsten Dunst) dan Michael (Alexander Skarsgård) berakhir dengan kegagalan. Di hari seharusnya mereka berdua menikah, semuanya tiba-tiba berubah. Justine jadi pendiam sementara kedua orang tua Justine yang telah bercerai tak bisa menahan diri untuk saling perang mulut. Justine memang tiba-tiba berubah. Ia seolah mengasingkan diri dari orang-orang di sekitarnya. Apa yang sebenarnya terjadi pada Justine?

Gagalnya pernikahan itu membuat Justine jadi lebih suka menyendiri. Meski tinggal bersama Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg), saudaranya, namun hubungan mereka berdua tak bisa dibilang harmonis. John (Kiefer Sutherland), suami Claire, pun tak bisa berbuat banyak. Hanya Leo (Cameron Spurr), putra Claire dan John, yang sepertinya cukup dekat pada Justine.

Suatu ketika, dikabarkan kalau Planet Melancholia sedang dalam perjalanan mendekati Bumi. Semua orang berharap bisa menyaksikan kejadian langka ini. Claire mulai merasa ketakutan kalau-kalau Melancholia bakal bertabrakan dengan Bumi. John sendiri yakin itu tak akan terjadi. Sepertinya dugaan John memang benar karena Melancholia memang hanya berpapasan dengan Bumi walaupun Claire mendapati fakta lain kalau Melancholia bakal berputar dan kali ini tabrakan dengan Bumi tak akan bisa dihindarkan.

Lars von Trier, sang sutradara, memang tak berusaha menyembunyikan ending dari film ini. Ending film justru diletakkan di bagian pertama. Bukan ending yang jadi masalah bagi Lars. Buat sutradara kontroversial ini, proses menuju ending justru lebih menarik daripada sekedar adegan akhir. Bagaimana hasilnya? Yang jelas ada beberapa nama besar yang bisa diandalkan dalam film ini. Dana produksi yang diperkirakan mencapai hampir US$10 juta sepertinya memang tak akan mendatangkan keuntungan besar namun sepertinya bukan itu yang dikejar Lars von Trier.

Danny harus berangkat ke Oman atau Hunter bakal dibunuh oleh seorang saudagar di sana. Saudagar ini menyuruh Danny mencari anggota SAS yang telah membunuh tiga orang anaknya atau nyawa Hunter yang bakal jadi gantinya. Tugas ini sebenarnya bisa dilaksanakan dengan mudah kalau saja tak muncul Spike (Clive Owen) yang ternyata tak menginginkan ada anggota SAS yang mati di tangan Danny.

The Sorcerer and the White Snake

The Sorcerer and the White Snake is one of the most epic movies produced by the Hong Kong cinema industry. It was recently premiered in the United States at the Venice International Film Festival. Based on Ming Dynasty novel, The White Maiden Locked for Eternity in Leifeng Pagoda, it has been the basis for countless stories, books, operas, tv shows, and films. This special effects laden incarnation of the story stars Jet Li, in an amazing joyride that blends kung-fu with a tragic love story, and the best "spiritual action film" to hit the U.S. since Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

altIf you want to understand the psychology of love in China, this is the movie to rent - because it's essentially Twilight for nerdy Chinese teenagers. The story begins with the monk Fa Hai (Jet Li) and his disciple Neng Ren (Wen Zhang) as they hunt down a demon "ice harpy", who punishes human men for their infidelities. After a fierce battle, Fahai traps the Ice Harpy with his begging bowl, which has magical properties. They then confine the demon in a vortex in Lei Feng Pagoda. Once this principle that all demons must be punished is established, the primary story begins... two snake demons - one in green and one in white, who manifest as beautiful women - spy on some men who are climbing up the mountain to dig for herbs. The green snake spirit decides to play a trick on one of the men, Xu Xian, scaring him and causing him to fall hundreds of feet into a lake to drown. The other snake spirit, Bai Suzhen (Eva Huang), feels compassion for the man, transforms herself into a human and dives into the waters to save him. Underwater, she kisses him to save his life... shades of Darryl Hannah in the movie Splash. They exchange vital force during the kiss and become karmicly intertwined.

altThe rest of the film is about Bai Suzhen falling in love with Xu Xian, and marrying him, even though demon human marriages are frowned upon. The karmic impact of their marriage is the eruption of a plague of succubus fox spirits in the village they live in - beautiful temptresses who suck the life energy from all the men in the town. Feeling bad about this, Bai Suzhen imbues her husband's curative tonic with her own life energy – erasing centuries of her accumulated spiritual power. This is followed by a somewhat fanatical Fa Hai hunting down and killing any and all demons in his path. However, when he sees that she gave up her life force to cure the villagers, he decides to let her go, threatening that the next time he sees her, he'll vanquish her... Then, to make matters worse, his disciple Neng Ren gets bitten by a bat-demon, and slowly transforms into a demon as well, which causes Fa Hai to pause and develop some sympathy for the demon. Seeing his own beloved disciple as a demon, he is unable to vanquish him... and simply tells Neng Ren to run away. At one level, this film is a parable about tolerance for "forbidden love" – possibly even a veiled message from the cultural ministry of China signaling that homosexuality should be tolerated in modern China.

However, there is a deeper layer of meaning in the film, which is about the spiritual man's quest to overcome his shadow. Even though the love story is between Xu Xian and Bai Suzhen, most of the time Xu Xian stands around like the hapless country bumpkin he is... and the real contest is between the snake demon Bai Suzhen and the monk Fa Hai. This is a battle between a monk - the archetype that represents man's spiritual nature - against a snake demon - that represents our shadow and powerful sexual unconscious. This is no ordinary snake, or a trickster offering a bite of the apple of the tree of knowledge - this snake demon has meditated for a thousand years to gain immense magical powers. She is able to telekinetically control millions of gallons of water, flood a temple, and manifest a giant 500 foot snake to battle with. The final plot twist comes when a wounded and nearly defeated Fa Hai, showing the many wounds she has inflicted, essentially admits defeat, and painfully assumes a meditation pose to accept her final death blow... But suddenly, he understands, and enters a state of divine grace and transcendent enlightenment. He suddenly regenerates from his wounds, develops 108 palms to repel all her magic, and emerges from the battle triumphant.

In the end, Bai Suzhen, trapped in the Leifeng pagoda, bows and offers a prayer to the Buddha and accepts her punishment, begging for one last embrace with her beloved. The Buddha is compassionate, and Fa Hai lifts a stone pagoda - with his bare hands - so she can escape her prison for one last tearful goodbye kiss with Xu Xian. And how does the film end? With Fa Hai and his disciple, now a full fledged demon, happily walking off into the sunset together.

Incidentially, in the original novel, Bai Suzhen is guided by the Goddess of Mercy, and is a demon who longs to become a goddess by doing good deeds... mainly bringing rain to drought stricken areas. To accumulate merit faster, she and her sister spirit, the green snake demon, transform themselves into women and travel to the human realm. They encounter Fa Hai, a fanatical Taoist sorcerer who believes that every demon is inherently evil and must be destroyed. He eventually traps her in Leifeng Pagoda. This film modifies the original story quite a bit, changing the sorceror into a more likeable Buddhist monk who could be a protagonist, as this allows the film to be someone less complicated than your typical Chinese love story that spans two or three reincarnations.

It's a great flick, that isn't as artistically moving as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, but still, it has merit and is worth a rental, especially if you're into seeking the tantric meaning embedded in the many layers of chewy goodness that the film offers. Four Om's for this one!

One last factoid: Leifeng Pagoda is a real place, on the beautiful West Lake in Hangzhou. Because of the legend of the White Snake, a superstition emerged that promised that bricks from the tower would repel illness or prevent miscarriage. As a result, so many people stole bricks from the tower that it eventually collapsed in 1924. Fortunately, it was rebuilt in 2002. In 2001, before it was rebuilt and the foundation was exposed, archaeologists using radar discovered a mausoleum under the pagoda, and excavated to find many treasures, most notably a rare and powerful gold-plated relic of the Buddha. Now you know what to say if you're visiting West Lake during a tour of China.

Final Destination 5

Film sekuel The Final Destination hadir untuk membuat spot jantung anda. Film produksi New Line Cinema ini didukung sutradara David R. Ellis dan Penulis Eric Bess serta pemain pendatang baru Shantel Vansanten, Bobby Campo, Hayley Webb, Nick Zano dan Krista Allen.

Suatu hari di sebuah tempat balapan, Nick O’Bannon menghadiri acara perlombaan balapan bersama teman – temannya. Akan tetapi, dihari yang bahagia itu berubah menjadi hari yang mengerikan. Buntutnya kecelakaan yang membuat teman – temannya mati, membuat nick bersama pacarnya Lori dan teman yang selamat, Janet dan Hunt untuk meninggalkan tempat itu untuk menghindari firasat kedua Nick menjadi kenyataan.

Ternyata, setelah mereka terbebas dari maut yang menjemput, itu bukanlah sebuah akhir melainkan baru permulaan bagi mereka. Firasat Nick yang selalu muncul menghantui membuat one by one meninggal hingga akhirnya Nick harus menyelamatkan diri agar terhindar sebagai korban.

Sinopsis Film The Final Destination ini saya kutip dari 21Cineplex penuh dengan tekanan psikologis ini harus ada di daftar list film anda. Itupun bagi anda yang menyukai film Horror … hehehe … Bagi yang tidak menyukai harap menghindari film ini, karena anda akan merasakan bagaimana ngerinya tragedi kematian.
